March 2014 Meeting and Issues to Discuss

From Mrs Ros Lewis:

Tues 11th March 6pm at the Royal Oak (upstairs).

Brigitte Wolfe will talk about her experiences at Straight Talk 2013,  Aboriginal women’s political skills training organised by Oxfam & we will also look at a  6 min film about the Close the Gap campaign.

A question to ponder: for our Button Day collection; we can

·       send the donations to Oxfam Australia for them to use according to need (as we have done previously)

·       or choose a specific Appealto donate to & use it in our promotion. Here are some to look athttps://www.oxfam.org.au/appeals/current-appeals/

Syria Crisis Appeal

Monetary assistance for Syria is much needed. Please see the following Appeal from Oxfam Australia:

Click Here to read further, donate and share. Thank you.

Please Note: Monetary donation will deliver essential supplies like fuel, blankets and stoves to children and families. According to Oxfam Australia's website, the worst of winter is yet to come.

Source: Oxfam Australia

Since the Syrian conflict began more two and a half years ago, more than 100,000 Syrians have lost their lives and more than 2.2 million people have fled the country.
Over 9 million people, nearly half the country’s pre-war population of 21 million, are in need of humanitarian assistance inside Syria. Of those, around 6.5 million people have been forced to flee their homes and remain trapped inside the country.
Oxfam is now helping more than half a million people across Syria, Jordan and Lebanon, but the crisis continues to escalate. One of the most bitterly cold winters in the Middle East in decades has now hit hard, pushing Syrian children and families into an even more vulnerable situation. Most refugees fled home with nothing, and now, hundreds of thousands are living in little more than makeshift tents to protect them against freezing temperatures.
With your support, we can scale up our work across the region to reach 650,000 people by March 2014,  helping them to survive against these unimaginable hardships.
